Sir Robert Peel, who is known as “The Father of Modern Policing,” outlined the foundation of policing in two of his 9 Policing Principles back in 1829. As an organization, we will remain flexible and committed to the philosophy of community-oriented policing, knowing that we cannot perform our duties effectively without the trust of our citizens.

We have witnessed extraordinary results by adhering to our principles of proactive policing, problem-solving, crime prevention initiatives, special investigations, use of technology, and mental health support and assistance for those suffering from substance abuse disorders. Our officers and professional staff have done an outstanding job addressing these issues by taking a comprehensive approach.

In Abington, our officers have witnessed an uptick in firearms violations, mental health emergencies, and juvenile crimes. This overcorrection of the criminal justice system, along with the current mental health and opioid crisis, has made life miserable for many who lost loved ones. These failed policies have had a devastating impact on our fellow citizens who live and work in Philadelphia with an unprecedented number of homicides, carjackings, opioid deaths, and other serious crimes. Consequently, repeat violent offenders, who previously would have remained in custody, were routinely being released into our communities. Some of these reforms were necessary, but many, like what we have witnessed with bail reform in Philadelphia, were reactionary. Over the last few years, our profession faced numerous challenges in the wake of the death of George Floyd and the subsequent calls to “defund,” and reform longstanding practices in our criminal justice system. The men and women of the Abington Township Police Department are honored and privileged to serve and protect this great community. A Message from the Chief of Police, Patrick Molloy
